Christmas tradition around the world

22 December 2025

Christmas is one of the most celebrated holidays in the world, but each country gives it a unique color. Customs, symbols, traditional dishes, local legends… Each culture brings its own magic. Here is an overview of the most fascinating Christmas traditions around the world.

1. The United States: the extravagance and magic of lights

In the United States, Christmas is synonymous with a magical atmosphere. Houses are covered in string lights, sometimes even participating in neighborhood contests. Christmas markets multiply, the giant Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center lights up New York, and the tradition of the stocking (suspended sock) remains a must-do. Families gather for a hearty dinner, often consisting of turkey or glazed ham.

2. Germany: the charm of Christmas markets

Germany is the birthplace of the Christkindlmarkt, those traditional markets filled with artisanal decorations, candles, mulled wine, and gingerbread. Children wait for Saint Nicholas on December 6th, who slips treats into their shoes carefully placed outside the door.

3. Japan: a romantic and surprising Christmas

In Japan, Christmas is not a religious holiday, but a romantic time comparable to Valentine’s Day. Couples go out for dinner, walk under the spectacular illuminations, and exchange gifts. A surprising tradition: the traditional Christmas meal is… a KFC menu, which has become a national ritual since the 1970s.

4. Sweden: the festival of light with Saint Lucia

On December 13th, Swedes celebrate Saint Lucia, a symbol of light in the heart of winter. Young girls wear a crown of candles, sing, and distribute saffron buns (lussekatter). Christmas is experienced in a soft, warm, and very family-oriented atmosphere.

5. Mexico: a vibrant and communal celebration

In Mexico, the Christmas festivities extend from December 16th to 24th with the Posadas, processions that re-enact the journey of Mary and Joseph. The celebration culminates with star-shaped piñatas, singing, and a generous meal. On the evening of the 24th, families gather around traditional dishes and a deep spirit of sharing.

6. Australia: Christmas in the sun

While the Northern Hemisphere warms up by the fireplace, Australia celebrates Christmas in summer. Barbecues on the beach, picnics, water sports… Australians happily spend the day outdoors. Santa Claus may even arrive by surfboard in some coastal towns!
