When we think of Christmas movies, we often imagine snow, Christmas trees, and sparkling streets… not necessarily Miami. Yet, some films play on the contrast between warmth, the seaside, and Christmas themes. This unexpected mix can make them especially endearing for those who live in Florida or love the idea of a sunny Christmas. Here are three films — or partially related ones — that combine Christmas and Miami.
Christmas in Miami (2005 / “Natale a Miami”)
This Italian Christmas comedy film takes the main character to Miami during the holiday season.
The story: Giorgio, recently separated, goes to his friend’s place in Miami to try to bring a little joy back to his Christmas holiday. Between misunderstandings, unexpected encounters and over the top situations, the film plays with the exotic setting of the city as well as the classic Christmas themes.
Even if the plot is not entirely made in Miami in spirit, it is one of the few Christmas films that explicitly reference the city.
Mr. St. Nick
This film features a character connected to Santa Claus’s world who lives in Miami.
The main character, Santa’s son, leads a luxurious life in Miami and must come to terms with his destiny during the holiday season.
This setting adds an original touch: the contrast between Florida’s warmth and the themes of Christmas, family, and responsibility.
Bonus / special mention) Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (through its connection with Florida)
This film doesn’t take place mainly in Miami, but the story begins with the McCallister family heading to Florida before Kevin accidentally ends up in New York.
The idea of spending Christmas holidays in Florida is present at the start of the story, creating an indirect link with Miami and the festive season in a warm, travel-filled context.
It’s not a Miami film in the strict sense, but it connects Christmas and Florida in an interesting way.
